How to steal someone’s fame and profit

11 Mar

The beauty of the internet is that almost everything can be quantified. Thanks to my web traffic statistics I can tell you how many people are visiting this website every day, how they are finding me, which blog posts they’re reading and how long they’re spending here. I can also tell you if they’re using a PC or Mac and if they’re using a PC whether they’re using Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome or another web browser. I can tell you which countries this site is most popular in and the Google search phrases that this site is most commonly appearing in. This kind of information is very, very, handy to have. It helps you to quantify your efforts and determine what is working and what isn’t when it comes to generating traffic, generating leads and selling on the internet.
Thanks for the traffic Brad

For instance, the statistics tell me that my most read article is The 4 Points Critical to Online Marketing Success. This fact is a revelation because it tells me that borrowing another’s star power is a very good idea when it comes to generating traffic.

I attribute the popularity of this one particular article down to one key factor – it has internationally known and renowned speaker and business builder Brad Sugars of Action Coach in it. If you scroll down to the bottom of the article you will notice the tags “Action Coach” and “Brad Sugars” This helps to inform Google and other search engines that this post was about these topics amongst other things.

Google has taken that information and when people have conducted searches on Brad Sugars and/or Action Coach, my blog post has come up. Now ask yourself “are people more inclined to search for Mal Gordon or Brad Sugars/Action Coach?” It is clear which term will be more popular because I have a long way to go before people are seeking me out as much as they are Brad.

What I am effectively doing is stealing some of Brad’s star power and personal brand to help give my own a boost and it’s working, traffic is building to my site thanks in part to the ever increasing marketing efforts of Brad Sugars and people like him. The more time and money Brad spends promoting himself and his business, the more people seek him out and find me instead.

So while I may not be as well known as Brad, I can easily borrow his know how, in this case in the form of a video to help boost my own, it’s that simple.

Are there any experts in your industry that you could aligning yourself with? The beauty of the internet is that it has brought down the walls that used to separate us from key influencers and thought leaders such as Brad.

4 Great Ways to Steal Fame

1. Identify the Stars

Seek out the noted authorities and key influencers in your industry/profession that you respect and would like to be aligned with. For example, if you were in the personal development and life coaching business then Anthony Robbins would be a good start. If you were an aspiring horror author, Stephen King would be your man.

2. Comment on their blog.

Once you’ve identified those who have star power in your industry, check to see if they have a blog. If they do, great! Most blogs allow readers to comment and more importantly leave a link to their webpage – free advertising! For example, Brad Sugars has a blog which you can comment on here Donald Trump has a blog Deepak Chopra has a blog, Siimon Reynolds has a blog even Sergey Brin who co-founded the mighty Google has a blog and “yes” that is the real Sergey Brin.

3. Comment on their social media messages

Siimon Reynolds is a very successful marketing guru, professional speaker and business builder. He has a a Facebook account and I added him as a friend. Because I added him as a friend I get to see his status updates and messages and the best part is that I can comment on them just as I did below. Many people will be following his messages and it’s oh so easy to jump in there and put your face next to his.

This goes for Twitter, Linkedin and all other social media tools too. Get in there and engage in conversations with the stars, they may just respond back and generate a whole lot of traffic for you in the process.

4. Use their content

Leverage off their wisdom by dropping their latest video into your site and giving your opinion on it just as I did with Brad. Or critique their most recent article and link your site to it.
