Media140 Perth Review – Day 1

14 Jul

Day 1 of Media140 Perth has been a hoot. A couple of takeaways:

Business is getting savvy

Corporate Australia is starting to move beyond the “what’s this social media thingo?” and “should I get a Facebook” and starting to talk “what’s the ROI of my social media?” and “how can I increase engagement with my audience?”

They’re Getting Serious

The whole giggly school girl factor of first time Facebookers is over. Businesses are committing serious time and effort to their social media community building and campaigning efforts as witnessed by the explosion in the number of social media monitoring tools and services on the market. I anticipate that this relatively new and fragmented industry sector will consolidate into a handful of large key players who will dominate their market much as Google and Bing dominate search and Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn dominate social networking.

They’re Willing to Experiment

The presentations by both Quickflix and Facebook were most illuminating. They both echoed my perceptions on where the industry is at and always will be – the experimental phase. The only thing that’s changing is the breadth and complexity of the experiments and the speed at which they’re being conducted.

To see how far we’ve come in just 15 odd months you may wish to re-visit my review of last year’s event here

Yes, lots of talk on ROI! And now I will be telling all my clients who ask this about the COI. Was a really interesting day – good to see a quick summary, thanks!
