Why Mac Users Suck

26 Feb

Dear agency graphic/web designer sitting on your you-beaut, gee-whiz Mac,

The reason your crappy banner ads or pretty much anything you create for the web doesn’t work is because you spend your life seeing the web from the Mac point of view.

To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy
- Sun Tzu

Heads up! The average web surfing pleb is not on a Mac or an iPhone or an iPad, they are using their crappy desktop PC in an office on work time. They navigate the stormy cyber seas via the good ship Windows and most likely some god awful version of Explorer, not Safari!

They don’t spend their days perusing design blogs and thecoolhunter because they are plebs with no nobility in their souls or appreciation for art.

The sooner you get this through your heads the sooner you can start creating work that appeals to and is understood by these voiceless masses.

End rant

So your saying, lower the bar because PCs suck right?

Not at all, what I mean to say is that in order to understand your target market you must think and act like them. Seeing the world from the Mac point of view is not the best way to do this because the web experience of your target market is completely different.

They way they interact with the web is different.

Having a taste and a standard is what you are asking them to quit. You can never give people what they want. And just because a majority of them don't care about design doesn't mean the minority should change themselves to be more “like” the rest of them.

Rishi, you've missed the point. I am saying that I have observed that there are many Mac users who only see the web from an elitist Mac point of view. How can you communicate with an audience when you don't understand them?

    Harsh but true :)

Sun Tzu is one smart cookie and your observation is spot on Mal! The customers may not be always be right, but they do pay your bills – something that quite a few fanbois (who works in the industry) don't seems to grasp :)
